What We Do In School
We initiate and assess the use of functional communication throughout the school.
PICTURE EXCHANGE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM (PECS)
We introduce PECs to pupils in order to teach them to exchange a picture of a desired item with a teacher who immediately fulfils their request.
The system we use at Hall School is signalong. We try to incorporate signing into daily routines to help pupils express their needs and reduce frustrations. Core vocabulary videos can be found on our school website if you want to practice at home.
IN CLASS SESSIONS
We regularly hold whole or small group sessions which aim to improve communication and interactive skills. These sessions may focus on improving use of Voice output communication aids (VOCAs), introducing PECs or teaching staff/pupils topic-related signs. Members of our team also work 1:1 with pupils if more intense support is needed.
AUGMENTATIVE AND ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION SUPPORT
Janine and Mia support members of staff with updating AAC devices to include topic-related symbols and any additional symbols that classroom staff or parents/carers request.
We hold weekly meetings to ensure that we are all up-to-date and to discuss any arising issue. For our Communication Policy leaflet, click here.
